Over the last few years, my perception of concrete has changed. I always knew that I wanted to use this medium to build my dream house, but who knew that people (myself included) would be wearing and using concrete as a fashion item.
Artists have pushed the boundaries of creativity, making delicate and intricate yet bold pieces. One such pioneer is Suzaan Heyns, fashion icon and designer, who oozes with concrete inspiration. Last week, she re-launched her Melrose Arch store, the second phase of her retail installation space.
The theme for the evolving store is Concrete Evolution – the store is now in the dripping phase, where the concrete sculptures start dripping and solids start to flow – breathing new life into the store. Suzaan’s concrete inspiration stems from her unusual collaboration with PPC Cement in 2012, for her Reimagine Concrete Spring/Summer Collection.
Suzaan’s store is more like a sanctuary that resonances sophistication, individuality and screams trend setter. Every item that your eye falls on, from the ceiling to the floor has something unique to capture the imagination. I absolutely love the feature mirror and will definitely have one in my walk-in closet in my dream house.
At the store re-launch, the guests received a custom-made concrete bow, created by Suzaan and Sybrand Weichers (sculptor and 2006 PPC Cement Young Concrete Sculptor Award winner) – a Suzaan Heyns item I will definitely be rocking! It’s a pity I cannot afford any of her designer wear…
You have to visit her store – Shop 53, Galleria, Melrose Boulevard, Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.
